Introduction to Standardized Work

Standardized Work is the name given to the work of documenting in detail all the steps necessary to perform a task in a production process (it is also applicable to non-production processes). These Standardized Work Instructions (SWI's) will make our processes more repeatable by reducing variability, and will be one of the pillars of continuous improvement.

Historically, work standards began to be developed by the American engineer Frederick Winslow Taylor, who had the curiosity to observe the variability that existed between the methods of different workers for a task, and selected those who had the best ones. Subsequently, he wrote down in detail the observed method and taught it to the other workers. In this way he managed to increase productivity significantly.
